A little slice of small town life.

The other day we were running a few errands after my chiro appointment. We needed to stop by the local farm store to pick up game bird starter for the keets, and a few other things.

We always end up chatting and joking with the staff there.  We bring them extra veggies we have, and I just picked up some corn and a whole bag of peepers from our friend there.

I caught the manager as he walked by to ask him if he'd talked to his 'hay guy' (we need some badly!!).  We stood out in the parking lot chatting about hay, and I confessed that I flagged down a farmer on his tractor the other day as he was cutting his alfalfa field.

Another local we are friends with, the manager's brother (tractor mechanic extraordinaire, horse blanket repairman, salsa whiz) had been chatting with us inside the building, and we thought he'd gone home.  Suddenly he appeared, circling around us on an old Schwinn cruiser, his grin as bright as the chrome handlebars.  A 50lb bag of chicken feed was slung over the rear rack.  Most impressive balance at slow speed!

We chatted about peppers, and tomatoes, the upcoming tomato and pepper tasting event at the mill. (It's awesome--we went last year too) The manager grows over a hundred varieties of peppers.  The conversation then turned to stuffed peppers, and the upcoming salsa competition (they both make awesome salsa)

It was a sort of bizarre and entertaining moment--three grown men talking about cooking and canning, but of course throw some spicy Italian sausage into the stuffed peppers and some competition into the salsa, and it seems about right.

Pretty funny--but we both smiled as we drove away, and we felt part of the community.
