Oops--the coop door blew shut while they were out ranging, so they ended up soggy and grumpy by the time I found out what had happened. Soggy April snow storm.

Penny hen can't believe her eyes. We built soil! (well really all the little organisms did). This is on the uphill edge of what was previously horse pasture. It was rock hard, over grazed and just generally sad. After three years of keeping horses off of it, ranging chickens on it, growing nitrogen fixers on it (buckwheat and clover) growing oats and then chop and drop in the winter, adding horse manure, this is what we have. Down slope from here there is much more, and our shovels went in so much easier. I just like this photo because you can see the soil change in a distinct horizon.
