Not much time to write today---the sudden arrival of warm weather has started melting our little bit of snow pack. Which leads me to my text to G yesterday afternoon: "you have to hurry and get home so we can start digging swales! We're losing all of our water!!!!"
I'm heading out shortly to pick up a bunch of cardboard for mulching our trees and cinder blocks to stop some of the flow of water off the property. We are planning on putting in some ponds, and I really want to stop the water up hill right now, so we can catch it when we finally get to dig. The ground isn't thawed yet, but muddy and slippery on top. It's amazing all of the little plants and grasses that are coming to life. The chickens are ranging and digging and now less pressure is on me to provide enrichment.

| These straw bale/hugel mounds will have to be moved....They have provided us with many tomatoes, squashes and peppers (and meadow vole and garter snake habitat) but this is where our pond is going to go. We will have to transplant all of the comfrey plants that did so well this past summer. |
